Packaging 101

Designing the right packaging might be the most critical component of ensuring your product is “retail ready”, meaning it meets all of the requirements from both a legal standpoint, but also is created in a way that meets the grocery store criteria. It can be exciting to develop a unique product but be careful to choose the correct dimensions and standard formatting so that you are eligible for industry trade.

Some common mistakes are:
Working with designers who are artists but do not know how to sell a product in a grocery store.
Choosing a shelf pack which is too different. This can create messy assortments within the category and retailers don’t like it.
Using a case size which is too large (or too small). This affects your velocity reports.
Adding too many details to your individual pack.
Thinking the digital version will be as impactful in stores under bright lights.

If you choose the wrong packaging, or work with a designer who will not help you scale, you are setting yourself up for more time and money to make the changes within your first year, or worse… being discontinued from stores. I can help. Contact me to get set up the right way the first time.
