What is CPG

I’ll never forget when I was first getting started and I asked someone what CPG meant. He said “that’s the industry you’re in!”. Talk about uneducated, woa. But, hey we all start somewhere, so don’t be afraid to ask anything. CPG stands for Consumer Packaged Goods and you’ll hear the term used all the time now. It’s the business making packaged products typically sold in grocery stores but they can also be sold online and includes food, beverage, personal care and cleaning.

Packaging 101

Designing the right packaging might be the most critical component of ensuring your product is “retail ready”, meaning it meets all of the requirements from both a legal standpoint, but also is created in a way that meets the grocery store criteria. One of the biggest mistakes I made when getting started was to create a product package shape which was too different, and also to create a case pack that was too large. Stay tuned for why those two critical decisions can make or break a business.

How to Land Grocery

This is the most common question I get. New founders think “if only I could land that store, I’ll be rich!.” Sure, there’s nothing like seeing your creation in the place where you and your family shop but this process is often rushed and without the right packaging and marketing strategy. Landing the grocery store will happen if you have a great product in great packaging with the right unit economics. I can show you how.
