What is CPG?
I’ll never forget when I was first getting started and I asked someone what CPG meant. He said “that’s the industry you’re in!”. Talk about uneducated, woa. But, hey we all start somewhere, so don’t be afraid to ask anything. CPG stands for Consumer Packaged Goods, and you’ll hear the term used all the time now. It’s the business making packaged products typically sold in grocery stores but they can also be sold online and includes food, beverage, personal care and cleaning.
Within this industry sector, you’ll find many positioning terms used, such as:
Commodity
Premium
Luxury
You will need to define your category within the store so that you are speaking to the right buyer at the right time. For example, in a grocery chain there are different category buyers and they typically only want to hear from you during your category review which is one or two times per year. Learn more about how to get into stores in this blog post, or book time with me. You do not need to pay brokers a monthly retainer to provide you with a contact. I suggest waiting to hire brokers until you have some traction. We can also talk more about that in an introductory call.
